FAQ

Good questions

What is the NIS?

The National Inpatient Sample is part of the U.S. Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). It is the largest publicly available all-payer inpatient database in the United States.

Why do weighting and sampling matter?

The NIS is a sample of U.S. hospitalizations. Using its sampling structure and weights correctly is what turns it into valid national estimates, and it is a key part of this class.

What software will I use?

STATA. You will learn how to use it for NIS analysis during the class.

Do I need prior research experience?

A basic understanding of research helps. If you are completely new, our Level 1 workshop is a good place to start.

Will I work on a real project?

Yes. Every student is included in an NIS project with a mentor, with the goal of publishing in a high-impact journal.

How is it delivered?

Live on Zoom, with guided, hands-on training and Q&A throughout.

How much does it cost, and when is it?

The workshop fee is $120. Dates for the next cohort will be announced soon, so join the waitlist to hear first.
